In partnership with State of Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, Goodwill provides a site for the Division’s Community Work Experience Program (CWEP). CWEP is a component of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and New Employees of Nevada (NEON) Programs. After an individual has been approved for cash assistance, as part of the TANF requirements, they are required to participate in the CWEP.

Program participants have a limited work experience, little or no recent work experience, little or no transferable skills, and typically have been unsuccessful in obtaining employment. In order to help them overcome their barriers to employment, they are assigned to the Community Work Experience Program at Goodwill to obtain practical work skills training and a valuable work reference.

Program participants work an average of 20 hours a week. They are paid by the State of Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, and are not compensated by Goodwill. As such, they are considered volunteers and trainees within Goodwill’s working environment.

CWEP worksites such as Goodwill are encouraged to employ CWEP participants but it is up to each site’s discretion. Qualified program participants may be considered for employment at Goodwill upon completing their CWEP assignment, but must follow Goodwill’s recruitment process. This program also provides a valuable screening tool for future employees.
